Value over luxury: how Australian smokers actually choose in 2026

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Value over luxury

Australian tobacco shopping has converged: every pack looks the same by law, and the price spread between brands is compressed by a tax that applies to every stick equally. The result is a market where value, availability and practicality drive decisions more than heritage.

Check What to expect
Driver Weight in the decision
Price position High — but the spread between brands is a few dollars
Availability High — what the local shelf or online range stocks
Format High — slims and super slims are a distinct habit
Heritage and prestige Low — the pack cannot advertise it

Why “premium” reads differently now

Without design cues, premium positioning depends on blend and price alone — and with duty dominating the price, the difference between tiers is often smaller than the difference between retailers. That is why value tiers have held their share.

The trap to avoid

Cheap is not a tier in a high-excise market; it is a compliance question. A carton far below the duty floor is untaxed product, and buying it is an offence — with the added problem that you cannot know what is in it.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Price position and availability decide; heritage cannot be advertised any more.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
