Tobacconists in Tasmania: licensed retail and the generation rule

Tasmania licenses tobacco retail and has legislated a smoke-free generation: anyone born from 1 January 2010 cannot legally be sold tobacco in the state. At the counter that means date-of-birth checks, not just “over 18” questions.
| Check | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Requirement | Position in Tasmania |
| Retail licensing | Yes |
| Smoke-free generation | No sales to people born from 1 Jan 2010 |
| Pack sizes | Sealed packs of 20 or more |
| ID checks | Date of birth, not a simple age question |
What the generation rule changes in practice
It adds a second condition to every sale: not only 18 or over, but born before 2010. Retailers have had to adjust their checks, and online sellers must verify a real date of birth rather than a tick box.
Buying across the state
Hobart, Launceston and Devonport all have licensed retail, with ranges tailored to demand. Because Bass Strait adds freight time, Tasmanian stock can lag mainland arrivals on niche variants.
Before you order — four checks that never change
- Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Tasmania is the clearest case for real age verification — a checkbox cannot check a birth year.
- The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
- Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
- State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
