Rolling technique: how to get a consistent roll every time

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Rolling technique

Roll-your-own tobacco gives you control that factory cigarettes do not — and control cuts both ways. A consistent roll depends on weight, moisture and distribution, and getting those three right is what turns a pouch into a repeatable smoke.

Check What to expect
Variable Practical guidance
Weight per roll Around 0.5 g thin, 0.6 g average, 0.8 g fat
Moisture Should form a strand when pinched, not dust or clump
Distribution Even along the paper; taper slightly at the lit end
Tension Firm but springy — too tight restricts the draw
Daily portion Take out a small amount rather than opening the main pouch repeatedly

Getting the draw right

A tight roll burns hot and pulls hard; a loose roll burns fast and unevenly. If the draw is wrong, adjust the weight first and the tension second — changing both at once makes the result unpredictable.

Why this matters at 2026 duty rates

Loose tobacco carries $2,587.90 per kilogram in excise, so wasted leaf is expensive. Consistent rolls waste less, and a sealed pouch keeps the leaf workable for longer. Our storage guide covers the routine.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Consistency is weight, moisture and tension — nothing else.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
