Cigar storage and humidity: why a dry cigar is a ruined cigar

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Cigar storage

Unlike cigarettes, cigars are tobacco in its least processed form and they respond sharply to their surroundings: dry air cracks wrappers and makes the draw harsh, damp air causes mould and an uneven burn. Stability matters more than any specific gadget.

Check What to expect
Storage Suitability
Wooden humidor with humidity control Best for boxes and longer storage
Sealed container with a humidity pack Simple and effective for small quantities
Fridge or freezer Avoid — condensation ruins cigars on warming
Car or shed Worst: temperature swings destroy wrappers

The two variables

Temperature and relative humidity move together, so a cool, dark, stable spot is the foundation of any storage setup. Fluctuation is the enemy: repeated expansion and contraction cracks wrappers and dulls flavour.

Reviving and disposing

Over-dry cigars can be brought back slowly in a sealed environment — never quickly, which splits the wrapper. Any cigar with visible mould or a musty smell should be discarded rather than smoked.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Stability beats equipment — cool, dark and steady is the whole trick.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
