Most popular cigarette brands in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Popular brands in the big three

Australia’s three biggest cities carry broadly the same brand families on the shelf, with local variation driven by migration history and neighbourhood demographics rather than by city-wide taste. That is a useful thing to know if you are looking for a specific imported name.

Check What to expect
City What tends to dominate
Sydney Mainstream Australian names plus a strong imported/slim selection
Melbourne Mainstream names with a deep slim and capsule range
Brisbane Mainstream names, strong value-tier demand
Everywhere Brand choice costs a few dollars a pack, not a different tax

Why brand geography is really migration geography

Where a city has a large community from a particular country, the brands popular there follow, which is why some imported names sell well in Sydney and Melbourne but never appear in regional Queensland.

Buying what you actually want

If you are chasing a specific imported brand, check whether it is lawful domestic stock: plain brown pack, large warnings, on-product filter message and a price above the duty floor.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Brand popularity moves with communities, not advertising — advertising has been banned for decades.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
