JPS cigarettes in Australia: the value-classic blend

JPS — John Player Special — traces to John Player & Sons in Nottingham in the 1870s, and its black-and-gold racing-era identity made it one of the most recognised cigarette names in the world. In Australia today it is sold as a value-tier option in standard and slim formats.

Where the famous pack design went
Australia’s plain packaging law removed brand artwork, colour coding and logos from every pack, including historic ones like JPS. What remains is the standardised brand name in standard type on a drab brown background.
Sponsorship and advertising
Tobacco advertising and sponsorship have been prohibited in Australia for decades; the motorsport associations that built the brand’s fame ended with those bans. It is a useful reminder that the brand was built by marketing that is now illegal.
Practical buying checks
Look for compliant pack photos, a stated 18+ verification step, and an adult-at-the-door delivery rule. A GST invoice with an ABN should follow every lawful purchase.
Before you order — four checks that never change
- Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. The JPS name is used in grey-market listings more than almost any other value brand — the historic recognition does the selling.
- The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
- Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
- State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
