Cigar accessories that matter: cutters, lighters, ashtrays and humidors

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Cigar accessories

Cigar smoking has an accessories culture built on ritual, and it is easy to spend heavily on objects that change nothing about the smoke. Four items genuinely matter; the rest are enjoyment and aesthetics.

Check What to expect
Accessory Why it matters
Cutter A clean cut protects the wrapper; a blunt blade tears it
Lighter A butane torch or soft flame lights evenly without tainting flavour
Ashtray A wide, deep rest keeps the cigar from rolling and burning unevenly
Humidor or sealed container Stable humidity is the difference between a good and a ruined cigar
Extras (cases, punches, stands) Convenience and ritual — optional

Spending wisely

Buy a cutter that cuts cleanly and a lighter that lights reliably; everything after that is preference. Avoid petrol-based lighters, which leave an odour that sits on the first third of a cigar.

Accessories are also a legal market

Lighters, cutters and humidors are ordinary retail goods — no excise, no tobacco packaging law. Tobacco itself is a different matter, which is why our buying guides separate the two.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Four accessories earn their place; the rest are ceremony.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
