Buying cigarettes online in South Australia: read this first

South Australia is different from every other jurisdiction: tobacco cannot be ordered by mail, phone, fax, email or internet for delivery to an SA address. If you live in Adelaide, Mount Gambier or anywhere else in the state, an online tobacco order is not a grey area — it is prohibited.
| Check | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Internet/mail order sales | Prohibited in South Australia |
| Packs under 20 cigarettes | Also prohibited in SA |
| Single cigarettes | Illegal Australia-wide |
| Nicotine pouches | Banned in SA |
What this means if you are in SA
Buy from a licensed South Australian retailer in person. A seller who offers to “ship discreetly” to an Adelaide address is describing conduct that is illegal on both ends of the transaction, regardless of the packaging.
Selling to SA from interstate
Retailers outside SA also cannot lawfully supply tobacco to SA addresses. That is why compliant Australian tobacco retailers state the exclusion plainly in their delivery terms — a seller who does not is either unaware of the rule or ignoring it.
The licence requirement
South Australia licenses tobacco retail and its consumer authority publishes a guide for sellers on what is permitted. It is short, and it is the clearest statement of the SA position available.
Before you order — four checks that never change
- Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. If a website ships tobacco to South Australia, it is not a well-informed retailer.
- The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
- Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
- State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
