Cigarettes in Hobart: ordering tobacco to Tasmania

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Buying tobacco in Hobart

Hobart sits behind Bass Strait, which adds a day to most mainland freight, and in a state with two distinctive rules: tobacco retail licensing, and a smoke-free generation law meaning anyone born from 1 January 2010 cannot legally be sold tobacco in Tasmania.

Check What to expect
State rule Tasmania — licensed retail plus smoke-free generation
Typical delivery 2–5 business days via Bass Strait
Handover Adult signature required
Age verification Date of birth checks, not a simple tick box

Why date of birth matters in Tasmania

The generation law means a compliant seller must confirm not just that you are 18 but that you fall outside the birth-date cutoff. Sellers who ask for a real date of birth — rather than a “yes I am 18” checkbox — are the ones doing it properly.

Freight across the strait

Devonport and Launceston are usually a little quicker than Hobart; all three depend on sailing schedules. Ordering early in the week with someone home avoids most failed-delivery loops.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Tasmania is the clearest test of whether a seller really verifies age — ask how they check.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
