Top loose tobacco brands for everyday rolling in Australia

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Everyday RYO pouches

An everyday pouch is judged by consistency: the first roll of the pouch should feel like the last. That depends on cut, moisture control and how the pouch seals once opened — and those are the things worth comparing between brands.

Check What to expect
Priority Why it matters
Fine, even cut Rolls quickly without crumbling
Moisture balance Forms strands; does not dust
Pouch seal Slows drying after opening
Pouch size 30 g, 50 g — matched to how fast you smoke

Matching pouch size to usage

A 50 g pouch contains roughly 83 cigarettes by the ATO’s 0.6 g equivalisation. If you smoke 20 a day, a pouch lasts about four days; if you smoke five, it lasts a fortnight and drying becomes the main risk.

Getting the most from each gram

Roll consistently, keep the bulk sealed and out of heat, and use a small daily carry pouch. With duty at $2,587.90 a kilogram, waste is the single biggest avoidable cost in rolling.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Consistency beats brand reputation when you are rolling daily.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
