Tobacconists in New South Wales: how to choose a store

New South Wales licenses tobacco retail, so a NSW tobacconist should be able to tell you who holds the licence behind the counter. That single question separates the licensed trade from the fringe, and it is worth asking before you become a regular.
| Check | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Check | What good looks like |
| Licensing | The retailer knows who holds the licence |
| Age checks | ID requested without prompting |
| Pack sizes | Sealed packs of 20 or more, no singles |
| Range | Plain brown packs — no colourful stock on display |
City and regional differences
Sydney shops carry the widest range, including imported-style slim brands; Newcastle and Wollongong lean mainstream; regional stores stock narrower ranges but are often the only local option. All of them operate under the same licensing law.
When the store cannot help
Some products — particularly imported names — are simply not supplied to Australian retailers as compliant stock. If a shop offers them anyway, ask where the stock came from before you buy.
Before you order — four checks that never change
- Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. In a licensing state, the licence question is the fastest quality filter.
- The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
- Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
- State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
