Double Happiness (Shuang Xi): the brand, the symbolism and why the name matters

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Double Happiness explained

“Double Happiness” translates the Chinese characters Shuang Xi (囍), a symbol of joy traditionally used at weddings. The cigarette brand of that name is produced within China’s state tobacco monopoly, which makes it unusual among international brands: it is both a household product and a national industry asset.

Name Shuang Xi — the doubled character for joy

In Australia Sold by some retailers; duty and packaging rules apply in full

Why the brand travels with communities

Shuang Xi is familiar to Chinese communities internationally, which drives demand wherever those communities are large — including Australia. That familiarity is precisely what attracts counterfeit and grey-market supply: the name does the selling.

What lawful Australian stock looks like

Plain brown pack with the standardised name, graphic warnings at 75% of the front and 90% of the back, on-product filter message, a price above the duty floor and a GST invoice. Anything else is not compliant domestic stock.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Household familiarity makes Double Happiness a counterfeiting magnet — verify the pack, not the name.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
