Budgeting for tobacco in 2026: what the price rises mean for a household

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: Budgeting for tobacco

With excise at $1.55274 a stick and two indexation dates a year, tobacco has become a genuine budget line rather than small change. Working out your real monthly figure — and planning around the increases — is more useful than shopping for discounts that cannot exist.

Check What to expect
Habit Per month (approx., 2026 prices)
5 cigarettes a day About $340
10 a day About $680
20 a day About $1,370
One 50 g pouch per week About $670

Planning around the calendar

Excise rises on 1 March and 1 September, indexed to wage growth. A modest purchase ahead of each date smooths the step, and knowing the dates prevents surprise at the counter or the checkout.

The waste you can actually cut

Storage is where money leaks: tobacco kept in a hot car or a dry air-conditioned room dries out and gets wasted. Sealing properly and buying the pouch size you will finish saves more than any brand switch, because duty dominates the price of every product.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Plan around March and September; fix storage before you shop around.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
