555 (State Express 555) in Australia: the slim international

Smoke Mart Australia graphic: 555 State Express

State Express 555 dates to the 1890s, when Albert Levy registered the name; it became a global brand in the 20th century and a particularly strong seller across Asia. In Australia it is stocked as an imported-style premium-slim option.

Origin British, registered in the 1890s

Formats in Australia Standard and slim variants depending on stock
Compliance Any pack sold here must be plain brown with large warnings

An international name in an Australian pack

Whatever the brand’s overseas identity, legal stock sold in Australia is plain brown with heavy graphic warnings, printed with the standardised brand and variant text. Overseas presentation is a signal that the stock did not enter through lawful channels.

Slim formats and draw

555 slims pull lighter than standard format. If you are switching from a full-flavour king size, the difference in draw is the first thing you will notice; the blend character is the second.

Verification checklist

Duty-paid pricing, an 18+ verification step, adult-signature delivery and a GST invoice. A seller who cannot produce the invoice can also not help you if the parcel is lost.

Before you order — four checks that never change

  1. Price against the excise floor. Duty is $1.55274 a stick from 1 September 2026 — about $31 in a 20-pack and $310 in a carton. Watch for “duty-free 555” listings — duty-free stock is for travellers carrying it themselves, not for domestic resale.
  2. The pack in the photo. Legal Australian stock is drab brown (Pantone 448C) with graphic warnings covering at least 75% of the front and 90% of the back — no logos, no brand artwork.
  3. Age and delivery. Distance sellers must verify you are 18 or over, and somebody who can sign and show ID has to be at the address. Lockers and unstaffed addresses can be refused.
  4. State rules. South Australia prohibits mail and online tobacco orders outright; everywhere else requires an age-verification system.
